St. Mary's Magnet Academy media center provides instructional support for students and teachers.  A variety of print and non-print materials for both students and staff are available in the media center.  Students are encouraged to check out books on a regular basis including Accelerated Reader titles, books for recreational reading, and materials that enhance their  understanding of the curriculum.

Georgia Performance Standards Based

Information Literacy Instruction

All classes are scheduled in the media center on an as-needed basis for information literacy instruction. The classes in the media center are based on Georgia Performance Standards and American Library Association/American Association of School Librarians nine information literacy standards.  These classes are collaboratively planned by the media specialist and classroom teachers and support class activities and lessons.  All information literacy skills are tested on the CRCT. The student evaluation of information literacy skills  is balanced and includes teacher/ media specialist observations, quizzes, and student work.

You can help your child become information literate by:

  • providing reading materials such as books, magazines, and newspapers
  • reading to and with your child
  • letting your child see you read
  • purchase a dictionary for home use

Student Media Festival

Classroom teachers, the video lab teacher, and media specialist  promote the use of technology to improve teaching and learning. Every year the media center sponsors the  Student Media Festival, celebrating outstanding student-produced media projects. Students and teachers from kindergarten through fifth grade are honored for their excellent work.

Student media projects such as live action video, multimedia projects, and photography foster learning across the curriculum. At the elementary school levels, reading comprehension, writing skills and math facilities are developed. Students also increase their abilities to plan, analyze, and interpret information.

State standards are met in a technological atmosphere of creativity cultivated through the production of student media projects.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a reading practice program for all students in grades one through five.  Students take the STAR Reading test so that teachers and the media staff can help the student select appropriate AR books.  Students read the book, and then take a computerized test about the book.  The AR management system automatically scores the test and keeps a reading log of books the student reads as well as the test scores and points earned.  AR reports are included with report cards.
